Sands Family

Round basket showing diaper twilled pattern made by Mrs. Earl (Viola) Sands

Drawing from Jones' field notebook of the stripper that Mrs. Sands used to prepare narrow strips of black ash.

Jones observed Mrs. Earl (Viola) Sands (maiden name Sword or Armstrong, born 1900) make this basket on July 21, one of his last days of his field work on Walpole Island. He may have chosen to interview Mrs. Sands because she used different techniques and  styles than he had observed used by other basket makers. In his field notes, he also drew a picture of the stripper that she used  to make the narrow strips for this basket.
