Shogonosh Family

Smith and Shogonosh family members showing the rush mat they made.

In July of 1933, Volney Jones met with several members in the Shogonosh family, including George Shogonosh and his wife Sarah (born Aquash, 1858). Sarah was the older sister of Mrs. Hyman (Ada) Smith. Jones also talked to their daughter, Elizabeth, and her husband John Colwell. In his notes, Jones often spelled George and Sarah’s last name as Shogonash. He also misspelled Elizabeth and John’s last name as Caldwell.

The Shogonosh family showed Jones the various techniques they used to make mats and baskets. Mrs. Shogonosh made and dyed the braids for the braided mats that she made out of hickory and out of corn husks. She also worked with Mrs. Smith on the rush mat, using techniques they learned from their mother, Medomo (born Kah GA Kian ME Go Qua) Aquash.  Elizabeth Colwell demonstrated the techniques she used to weave the market basket.
