Dyes

Black Ash splints, dyed red with commercial dyes.

In 1933, many of the basket makers Jones interviewed used commercial dyes to add color to their baskets. A few basket makers knew how to make dyes from locally available plants, called natural dyes. Jones recorded how natural dyes were made from Three Leaf Goldenthread, Bloodroot, and Grey Alder, and Black Walnut.
