Mrs. Joe (Margaret) Savoir

Mrs. Joe (Margaret) Savoir made folded birch bark containers to collect tree sap.

When Volney Jones met Mrs. Joe (Margaret) Savoir in 1933, she was one of the oldest members of the Garden River community. She told Jones she was 96 years old. Bill Seuliar suggested that Jones contact Mrs. Savoir when Jones asked him about the folded birch bark containers he had at his sugar camp.

Mrs. Savoir told Jones that she has previously made and sold these types of containers to sugar producers to earn cash.  She showed Jones how she made the containers and he purchased  two containers from her. To learn more about how she made these containers, visit the birch bark container page.
